Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.” - Khalil Gibran

Golden hour silence brakes at dawn as auto engines rev to begin an unfamiliar routine up and over the hill. Large buses, of the yellow variety, loop around scooping up young minds ready to learn as parental figures high five each other behind the scenes. The beginning of the grind well under way for most, though for a few, whom move to the beat of their own drum, move steadily towards where salt and sand meet in harmony.

CHANNEL: High tide edging back as the sun casts liquid gold on the surface. Glassy and calm, W swell relaxes into oblivion. To the right of the pole, small shapes and sizes materialize for a quick moment before turning white to shore. Knee high on the first and second with ankle trailing behind.

PATCH: A secret is hiding underneath a layer of fluid only seen by the long serving eye. Those who know will give it time and wait with patience to reap the rewards. Trust the process and don’t rush.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Good, better, best. Never let it rest. ‘Till your good is better and your better is best.” - St. Jerome

Morning sun salutations glowing golden yellow as dawn breaks, turning night into day. Parking shenanigans slow to begin as temps start at a chilly 42. Forgotten debris up the ramp as we descend into oblivion, one foot in front of the other. Crunching sand under foot, leaving trails behind, looking ahead to what’s to come. One last moment of calm before reality sets in with a large case of the Sunday scaries.

CHANNEL: Slow moving forward ocean motion as the half bakers dozen are missing the mark. W swell resuming the regularly programmed schedule in the knee height with an extra paddled required to break through. Out going tide doing its best to bring those past the starting point just right of the pole. Position is key and active paddling a must.

PATCH: A dynamic duo of stand up crew, dig their sticks in deep for the cause. Calm and even keeled the plain is unbroken as the search continues on the horizon. Keep your eye on the prize, for belief is half the answer to the burning question.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“There is no sun without shadow, and it is essential to know the night. ” - Albert Camus

The seas do not sing a pleasant song this morning as overnight rains and winds have skewed the perspective. Tumultuous waters seeking purchase wherever able while debris collects on ramps and lonely avenues. Now the skies are clearing and sun shines down with temps at 52F and the promise of storm and wind in the past. Surf potential on the far edge of marginal but formalized intentions means there is no turning back now.

CHANNEL: Unformed shapes working their way through the Channel as the morning begins damp and somber. Wall observers survey with clear eyes and hopes of corners that contain stoke if not outright slides. Allowing some hours to pass may rejuvenate the weather and lessen the confusion currently present.

PATCH: Seemingly lost at sea with no discernible shadows cast in the current contributions. A few wayward sailors have set course for this destination and are meeting with mixed results. Fuller morning tide has the urge to push but crests of consideration elude even keen sliders. Everything seems in motion but not in one general direction.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“There is some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for. ” - J R R Tolkien

Skies remain clear and dry with no applicable winds and temp cool at 42F. W swell easing back but still full of energy and promise. A micro-tic from the S adds to the merry mix but likely swallowed up by the overwhelming impacts already being felt. Tides remain welcoming and delivering enough water to keep breakers revolving during all parts of the day and night. Know your limits, exceed your limits.

CHANNEL: Some heavier helpings and dumping desires have shifted focal points to directly in front of the boat ramp. A measured approach can yield breaker rewards with quick pops and drops and lightly exposed faces. Split peaks somewhat lopsided and challenged have some ducking and diving while others slide along. Tune in to the new surroundings and find the proper bearing to experience full stoke.

PATCH: Warbled segments at all depths with extra efforts required to make the entry. Slides of shortened length and lesser success rate as many doors are closing before they even open. Maximum energy will be expended on this worthy pursuit and there may be some thrills to go along with the spills. Jump off the top turnbuckle and suplex the day.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“When you talk you are only repeating something you already know. But, if you listen you may learn something new. ” - Dalai Lama

Dampness in the streets and cotton candy skies above as we wipe our eyes and behold the beauty. Temps continue a moderate trend and hold form at 50F with just light winds that pose no issues. Deep W swell still in charge and pushing water masses up and down the beach while scattering all sliders within a wide range. Holiday celebrants still encamped but evening activities taking priority over early morning watery pursuits. A small collection of the hopeful are attempting to mark territory and manage positions while seeking breakers to begin the year.

CHANNEL: Full body and build up but lacking in form, shape and luster. Heaping helpings of closed out offerings with only the corners available to mine the stoke. Rinse yourself free and find a correct frequency to tune in to what is real today.

PATCH: Animated liquid under the high tide flag drawing the loggers and SUPs from all corners. More confusion than configuration with breakers emerging all along the route to the promised land. Though most attempt with gusto and relish a more considered approach will be best plan of action to achieve any wave of consequence.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.’” - Alexander Graham Bell

Explosive start to the New Year with celebrations ranging well into the night. Now a zen-like stillness hangs over the village along with some morning coastal cloud cover. A determined minimalism dominates the parking areas with the recent contingent of Young Americans choosing to sleep in. Other denizens of the deep and those that never sleep are ringing in 20/20 with resolute determination. Temps are already moderate at 55F and the winds blow lightly from the NE. Large and competing swells range far and wide with tides favorable throughout the day. A day of challenges on many levels but no better way to wash off the old and ring in the new.

CHANNEL: Our single sentinel stands watch and seeks solace over un-calm waters as new W swells attack. Shapes and shadows exist in scattered form with occasional quality offerings worth the pursuit. A place to reflect upon a year’s passing if you wish to be surrounded by friends and new acquaintances.

PATCH: The usual faces going through Wednesday paces yet joined by masses above the norm. A crowd of the cautious and sanctioned mingle as holiday revelers mix with the regulars. Worlds collide as it all comes together along with big W swell on this Day 1 of 365. Some larger profiles are elicited and a hunter’s eye and patience is required to capture.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.’” - Robin Williams

Beaming sun cutting through a wistful mist as we prepare for the end of days. While the glowing orb will eventually provide, we start the day at 42F and calm. Preparations being made for festivities and swell with the lead-up a bit of a let down. Most energy has a W leaning focus today and the tides remain friendly. The possibilities are endless, yet limited as well, and often located within. Move forwards into the New Year with no regrets and put it down and walk away..

CHANNEL: Mid tide mingling with low water signals making for languid conversation and slides. Entry comes with remarkable ease as water fails to reach to concrete abutments. Only one’s desire and intent are the limiting factors though patience will be required to realize true nirvana.

PATCH: Hope hangs high in the early morning sky but a sluggish start tells another reality. Gather your reserves to wait out the early occupation while casting an eye to the horizon and the PM hours. Though potential lies in state, acknowledge what it is.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“If you think of something, do it. Plenty of people often think, ‘I’d like to do this, or that.’” - Lydia Davis

Oh what a day this could be! Squinting eyes and hands for brims search for the sea. Subjects A and B have made a surprise appearance. Guest B2 has swung in with his froth leaving a trail. So much good company and more is on the way. Hardly a crowd in the water but you’ll make friends for sure. A and B2 don’t bite, but B, I can’t say for sure. Sand bars are in place but copious amounts of water will just drown them away. Lack of swell doesn’t help either. No matter, the sun is out, the streets are steaming, and the beach is glowing.

CHANNEL: Two plus B2 still equals three. Plenty of space for more but the dish does not look particularly appetizing. The main course is up now with an unpleasant desert filling in soon. Maybe we should have been here earlier for the hors d'oeuvres.

PATCH: Unoccupied as of now but I have a pretty good idea of the first dippers. They’ll grab their glider and log, maybe catch a few shin high nuggets, and they’ll love every second of it.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Anybody with artistic ambitions is always trying to reconnect with the way they saw things as a child.” - Tim Burton

The temperature has stayed steady, but the sky has changed. No longer can we escape the frigid den and step into the sunlight for warmth. A thick blanket of fog had trapped us inside with bigger, meaner rain clouds to follow. It is a beautiful day no matter how you spin it, just ask the man with the runny nose, or the woman in the puffy coat; for a day at the sea is a good day indeed.

CHANNEL: A crowd has gathered in the depths of the channel and spreading across to Seadrift. Countless weekend warriors take this weekend day to keep the routine going. Early morning remnants still may still be lingering in the water, but very little action is seen at this time. However, this does not stop men, women, and children alike from dressing for the task.

PATCH: Two ambitious loggers paddling fiercely for anything that moves. Little success was witnessed, and little will be expected due not to capability, but reality.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Thoughts become perception, perception becomes reality. Alter your thoughts, alter your reality.” - William James

Chill factor above freezing though hints of frost exist. Skies are impeccably clear with winds at rest and temp lingering at 39F. Beams of sun as a guiding light or siren’s call and being answered by a youth contingent free from the educational institution shackles. Whirlwind of activity and varying states of undress and redress are observed. Foamie Wavestorm Captains at the helm and leading the holiday charges.

CHANNEL: While largely without form due to recent sandbar realignment, the breakers at present entice all comers. Thought and reason are disposed of casually and frivolity takes hold in the early hours upon a rising tides. All swells radiate from the W with angles that conflict with our coast. Water walls curl towards buried sand and rock with slides of humble length being enjoyed.

PATCH: Mid tide vectors and synapse connectors find mostly the sloshing of carbon paddles and their associated vessels. A variety of watercraft are finding a home with forms shaking off the morning rust to allow for shapes being ridden if not fully enjoyed. A keen eye may spy the pearl but getting it into one’s grasp remains elusive.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Happiness, not in another place but this place… not for another hour, but this hour.” - Walt Whitman

Gusty evening yields to a cool morning of clarity and opportunity. Temps retreat to 41F but the winds have quieted and now gently blow from the NE with tickles of warmth in the later offerings. Post holiday gatherings in effect, given the lack of available parking and the early flurry of activity. Friends and family from all age brackets don neoprene hoods and prepare to seek absolution among the breakers. While conditions are far from legendary they are providing the gift of stoke, slides and smiles to those with unclouded vision and hearts open wide.

CHANNEL: A modest mix of modalities exists within the briny deep and spatial sandbars await any and all directional drama to come their way. New winter swell from due W has inclinations of landing while the tide slowly rises to greater heights than expected. Afternoon the drain plug gets pulled and all water will be whisked away to the darkest depths. Pursue your dreams today and rewards will be forthcoming.

PATCH: Wave engagement potential with possibilities more than meets the eye. Tides have water levels open for occupancy at most points on the compass and to those with purity in their pursuits. Being embraced to the full extent, careful contemplation will be required to unlock the true meaning contained by the breakers being dispensed.

“It’s not what’s under the Christmas tree that matters, it’s who’s around it.” - Charlie Brown

T’was the day before Surfmas and all along the beach, the sun was brightly shining, like a colorful peach. The wetsuits were hung on the drying rack with care, in hopes that Surf-Nicholas soon would be there. Drew was bundled, all snug in his neoprene suit, while practicing cheater fives with his left foot. When down the ramp, there arose such a clatter, Drew sprinted down Brighton to see what was the matter! The sun on the sand sparkled and glowed, gave a shiny luster to the rock sculptures below. A wink of an eye and a shaka by hand, Drew knew in an instant it must be Surf-Nick! He spoke not a word and went straight to his work, and filled all the wetsuits with good vibes and good surf. Giving a nod, up the green wall he rose, Drew heard him exclaim as he surfed out of sight. Merry Surfmas to all and to all a good paddle out!

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“The smallest oceans still make big big waves.” - Eddie Vedder

Feeling the chill deep within, silently watching the sun rise in all her golden glory, temps begin at 42. Cruising along up and down, taken spaces in between white lines fill the void. Sticks perched on top, without movement to unload and no neoprene insight. From atop the wall the flooding rush of ocean spray dances against blue, falling down to gray. High levels an extreme, though wind remains low and all are patiently watching and waiting.

CHANNEL: No wind in sight as the ocean has settled and calmed. Tidal swings an extreme high and low, as swollen levels rise beyond normal for now. WNW swell fading on the horizon resulting in mellow forward movement. Too much water for any white water and not a soul bobbing. Practice patience and time it just right with the fast outgoing tide. Knee slides just might be coming your way.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“The dream is not the destination but the journey.” - Diane Sawyer

Drenching sheets of rain pounding downwards while the wind reigns King as we welcome the first day of winter. Deserted and empty, the streets remain quiet as all are seeking shelter from the storm. Debris scattered up the ramp as water surges with force from high tide leaving no stone unturned. The ocean, she’s mighty and flexing her force against the sea walls casting thick veils of salty wetness sky high. Testing the elements is not on today’s quiz.

CHANNEL: Wind churned and blowing sideways, the Channel is out of order. Gail force warnings in full effect and on high alert as the ocean eats away everything in her path. Not a day to prove ego size by tempting fate. For today, practice pop-ups on land in the warm comfort of home.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Movement is good for the body. Stillness is good for the mind.” - Sakyong Mipham

The furies blow with savage intent and the sea is awash and maligned. Winter swells still activated and engaged but swirled and disjointed due to high tide and winds. A risen sun remains hidden behind clouds and the temp holds form at 56F. Stoke sought may be denied today unless expectations are lowered and positive mental outlook is raised.

CHANNEL: Wind sheared chunks of breaker make for adventure and ambitious endings. Water up the ramp and along the seawall add to the excitement but also the damage potential. Sandbars both mystical and literal remain buried under the depths as sliders seek the low line at the high tide. Less wind and water are the only cure for these ills.

PATCH: Shreds of what once was and may again be. Foam and whitewater are tossed and jumbled upon an angry ocean. Those with the right set of eyes will see the moment where the wave evolved, crested, broke and then pulled the entire dream back into the sea.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“You have a destination far beyond where you find yourself standing today.” - Guy Finley

A slight chill down to 48F though skies remain open and colored with a morning disposition. The coast rings clear for all to hear and many have heeded the call. Realignment in process as storm recovery settlements take place. High tide on the retreat helps with shape and access and while still generally in disrepair there are reasons to be content. The immediate future still remains unknown but for now you can take what you need and leave the rest, but never take the very best.

CHANNEL: A majority of bodies have amassed with few exceptions lingering upon concrete walls. Mid-range ripples with wide sweep at present moment and due to higher water levels. Look for the ticking of the endless clock to show you what you may ultimately seek.

PATCH: Expectations run low while the tide remains high and paddle pushers have gathered to experience a mellow joy. Slow rollers push the determined towards uncertain exits while suspect loggers bide time for less water. There are no illusions that this lineup will remain slim as stoke raiders are certainly ready to pounce if opportunity presents itself.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” - Pablo Picasso

Deep thoughts and dense calculations as the early light punctures the cloud cover above. The winds have calmed and the temps have risen with outlook settled into the near future. Though the skies are relatively at ease, the seas remain a tad tumultuous as seekers attempt to make something positive from the offerings. Water levels remain optimal with tidal swings not detrimental to slides. Tread lightly along the ramp of doom as most sand has been returned to the sea and unseen obstacles are now fully evident.

CHANNEL: A assemblage of rough riders strike early with varying degrees of success and failure well mixed. The lowering tide and slack winds effort to refine the pulsating breakers into manageable partitions. Intermingled within the confusion are some possible gems to be mined like crystals from the depths.

PATCH: Sometimes is feels like the world’s stuffed with feathers. Table bottom gum holding it all together. You can chase it but it won’t come easy. Defy conjecture and reject the rose.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” - Socrates

Steady rain and associated winds have all waterways rowing and flowing. Plenty of water moving both on land and at sea with playing fields not suitable for fish nor fowl. All applicants huddle and shiver while looking for the dry patches upon which to perch. A day to tread lightly and fortify oneself with strong black tea and future preparations for after the storms have passed.

CHANNEL: Much water moving about though spatial integrity is nil. Broad breakers are summoned from the depths and there will be no takers or money makers during the early hours. Good patrons of the sea have forgone any attempts and will quietly wait and contemplate future endeavors.

PATCH: Vague spaces with no traces of form or coalesced shadow. Dead end drives with no exits and shifted entrances resulting in more frustration than invitation. Stoke meter dropping to zero.

Inspirational Quote of the Day:
“Sometimes the best things are right in front of you; it just takes some time to see them.” - Gladys Knight

Parading goats with sandy hooves and one pat of butter in tow, march along the oceans water line. Chatter amongst friends, volumes high in tone, a chance meeting of celebration. Back and fourth with eyes wide open, a tough decision to be made. Has the journey come to an end or has it only just begun? Quick to not miss a beat, the fork in the road disappears while wet neoprene prevails.

CHANNEL: Hazy gray with hints of blues overcast yellow light trying to peek through. Ruffled texture on the surface from pre-storm breeze as the W swell is sluggish this AM. Consistency is out the window resulting in shin height forward movement right of the pole. Get it while you can for Mother Nature has others plans this afternoon.

PATCH: Inside rocky tops inching up while the ocean recedes for now. Wishy-washy out yonder, for the ocean can’t seem to make up her mind. Decisions, decisions……we’ve made it this far, can’t turn back now.
